Tim was sent home to recover from shrapnel wounds he received in combat, and was exposed to anti-war protests for the first time while in a recovery ward with other injured Veterans. Tim was upset and disheartened, not just for himself, but also for the other troops who had given so much for their country.

Tim had only been deployed to Vietnam for a few months when an RPG landed a few feet away from him during a heavy attack, peppering him with shrapnel. He was sent back home to recover from his injuries, but, as he would later find out, his challenges were just beginning.

Tim took a few, brief moments while deployed to teach someone how to play the guitar. Shrapnel from a sudden explosion nearby killed the Soldier who Tim was teaching. Tim was unhurt, but he blamed himself for the Soldier's death for years afterward, until a trip to VA helped him put the experience in a larger context.

While teaching a science class, Tim suddenly had a flashback to his experiences in Vietnam, remembering some gruesome things he had seen. Fortunately, an assistant principal who was a fellow Veteran and understood his experiences was on hand to help him get through it.

Tim didn't feel safe and couldn't sleep at night when he was alone. At first, he tried to overcome the problem by barricading the door and sleeping with weapons. He finally realized he needed support to come to terms with his fears and overcome them.

Tim's brother was a Veteran and he had problems with alcohol that led to his death. Tim wanted to go to the scene where his brother had died, but there were too many reminders of his experiences in Vietnam. He couldn't believe Vietnam still haunted him after so many years.
