Dr Janet Whitley, of the FDA office of orphan products development, spoke at the Autoimmunity Research Foundation's 2005 conference in Chicago. She presented a number of study designs which the FDA regards as acceptable in lieu of placebo-controlled clinical trials.

Prof Trevor Marshall's chaired the session on "Metagenomics" at "BIT's 2nd World DNA and Genome Day," April 25-30, in Dalian, China. He also gave a "state of the art" overview of human metagenomics, in a presentation titled "The Human Microbiome lies at the Heart of Autoimmune Disease."
